Description
Mostly short, low angle climbs, perfect for learning how to use your feet and equipment, and rather convenient to Seoul. Some fixed gear/and easy to make anchors.
Directions
From the Surak Resort entrance (Sangok-dong, on Hwy 43 N of Namyangju City) head up one of the two main trails to Okryu Waterfall (on the way to Naewon Am). At this point the trail branches off left to Eunryu Falls or continues up and past Keumryu Falls, which I believe also has ice. It takes about an hour.
Busses 33-1, 1-1 or 2-5 from Namyangju City go near the resort.
Safety Concerns
Bad ice, overused ice, crowds and classes as it has low angle beginner ice and is close to Seoul. (On the other hand, a different day might see none of these complaints!)
I was here early season and the ice wasn't super hard. My crampons sprung some leaks in the rock, which wasn't super comforting!
Gear to Bring
Gear, slings for setting TRs or a few screws to practice placement.
Additional Comments
Some concessions down the trail.
I've only been here once (for ice) and while happy to get out and climb, but was otherwise unimpressed. But the only other ice-climbing I've done in Korea was at Seoraksan!
So I can say that a moderate approach and beautiful setting still makes for a good winter's day!
