Mangjubong (Seonyu Island) Submitted on December 8th, 2006 by skinsk Print

Description
Seonyu-do is an island 50 km from Gunsan, located at the center of the 20 islands of the Gogunsan Archipelago. Mangjubong is the prominent rock-mountain that juts out at the end of the main beach. It's made of granite of varying quality (some of it quite friable).

Of all the rock on the island(s), the only bolts we saw were these 2 routes on Mangjubong, which a couple of KOTRers had found previously.

UPDATE: I discovered these were put in quite a while ago (maybe 80s? but definitely at least 90s) by the Jeonju Climbing Center. . . an 11b and 11a (called JCC, as they often named routes they did!) I believe the one on the left is the easier route.

Directions
Ferries from Gunsan go to Seonyu-do once a day, more frequently in the summer. 063-442-8755/8845

A causeway (not open to the public yet) and other ferries head to nearby islands from Gunsan.

It's impossible to miss Mangjubong if you go to Seonyudo. . . and impossible to miss the routes if you walk up to the base and look.

Safety Concerns
Some runout, loose and/or dirty rock. . . this was the beta from Joshi: "The one route we climbed was long, and I had to cheat a bit on the high crux, so I'd put it at 5.11a give or take. The bolts were new and the anchor was your standard metal death triangle with old webbing . . ."

Gear to Bring
60 meter rope and a dozen draws should work. Nerves of steel.

Additional Comments
Not the place to head for climbing, but if you're in Gunsan or you're planning to go to Seonyudo, you might bring the rope and rack. The hike up Mangjubong is worthwhile.

A bit of a letdown as a tourist destination. A little trashy, with some pretty rundown areas, and also plently of new construction and related noise. If you're not a seafood fan you might bring something to eat.

There are some nice rocks and OK shell beaches (which I assume get very crowded in the summer). . .

I'm only 5 months late in writing this but hey; you can't be a slacker if you don't slack. Anyway, I have to say that if you enjoy exploring a bit and clawing up rock, then you will enjoy going out to Seon Yu Do. It's not the premier climbing area of Korea, so if you want to get a full day of climbing in, I'd head somewhere else. I personally enjoyed myself, but then again I'm happy to be doing anything that you don't get paid for...

Thanks so much Joshi! We know you have been very busy taking photos of Oklahoma! You could frame some of these and put them up at home! Heck, I might print off a copy of the Nude (Chicken) Beach (Bar) Bus for my bathroom!

Also worth noting the proximity to Gunsan(Kunsan) AF base. . .
