Hanyang University 자연암장 Submitted on June 5th, 2006 by skinsk Print
Type: Rock Climbs Province: Gyeonggi-Do City: Seoul

Description
Granite aid/trad/sport practice wall smack in the "middle" of Seoul! There's a 5.10 sport route with artificial holds, an arching crack (under a roof) for aid or trad practice (two nuts and numerous pitons are fixed, but still some room to place small wires and maybe an alien. A short trail right from the staircase down would let you fix a TR, but except maybe the corner crack (a hard slabby near featureless route) there's little possibility.

Directions
Hanyang Univeristy Station on the green line. Exit one, walk a few meters until you reach the University gate (right). Keep veering right until you're near the Union? with some basketball courts. Look for the steps in front of you (navigational images) and head up keeping left until steps lead down to the crag. Less than 10 minutes from the train to training.

Safety Concerns
Some fixed gear may be a little old, but seemed solid. No real safety hazards, which makes it a good place to train.

Gear to Bring
Small gear (rps, aliens, little nuts). . . aiders, some draws and your shortest rope will do.

Additional Comments
Ideal if you want to practice trad/aid, live in Seoul and have a few hours to spare in the day.

Trash/fire pits suggest the area gets some use, but no students that I asked were aware of it, no one came by, and for the most part it seemed a quiet abandoned place. Might get some CCs and students looking for a quiet spot during school hours, but it's quite hidden for being in the middle of campus.

Doubt that you'll have much competition for the route(s). . . fun way to kill a couple of hours!

I just tried to go back out to this mini-crag today and it was strongly blocked off. Lots of warning signs and tape saying "don't enter" in Korean. Sucks because I spent a few hours here earlier this year and it's alot of fun. I guess you could just jump the tape and get through. Anybody know why this is closed off now?

Just went a few days ago and we jumped the tape. Don't think it's a problem though because a student there told us it was because they were planning construction on the stairs.

I wasn't climbing, but I was in the area and thought I'd check it out.
There are no access restrictions here, but the site was a little overgrown , suggesting that it really doesn't get very much use.
The bolts on the artificial holds (of which there appear to be more now than in the photos) seem a little rusty but I didn't do a thorough inspection. Can't make any real comments about the quality of the anchors at the top (all but one looked like wire death triangles).

I went here this morning to check it out. It could be a decent place for students with very little time. The stairs are wooden now and the site was completely overgrown with weeds and thorns. I stomped it down and set a toprope by going around the right side. About halfway up the stairs i jumped the rail to a small access trail that led to the top of the pitch. I solo toproped the two center routes and the holds were strong but weathered and rusty. Nothing spun and the anchor held fine although it was a death triangle wire.
